Cancer · Capricorn

One of you keeps the house warm. One of you keeps it standing.

Cancer and Capricorn are opposite each other, and the axis they sit on is the oldest one there is: care and provision. Cancer builds shelter out of feeling. Capricorn builds it out of work. They are doing the same job, and each is convinced the other is not doing it at all.

What pulls

Relief, on both sides. Capricorn has usually been the responsible one since roughly the age of nine, and Cancer is the first person who ever asked how they were rather than what they were handling. Cancer, who is used to being told they are too much, meets someone who does not find them too much at all, just unfamiliar, and who stays anyway. Each one covers a hole the other has been living around.

Where it grinds

Capricorn expresses love by doing: the bill is paid, the car is fixed, the problem is handled and never mentioned. To Capricorn this is not a substitute for the feeling, it is the feeling. Cancer needs it said out loud, and reads the silence as an absence. So Cancer asks for reassurance, Capricorn hears an accusation that the work was not noticed, and both of them end the evening feeling unappreciated by someone who is actively trying to look after them.

The long version

This is one of the most durable pairings in the zodiac and one of the loneliest when it goes wrong, because it goes wrong quietly. It survives on one skill, which is saying the thing rather than demonstrating it and hoping. It is worth knowing that where each person’s Moon and Saturn fall will tell you far more about whether this works than the two Sun signs will, and sometimes flatly contradicts them.
